Face Lift

As we age, the effects of gravity, sun exposure, stress and years of facial muscle movement take their toll on our face. As a result, our face and neck skin loosens, the muscles of the neck weaken and folds and fat deposits accumulate around the neck. A face lift can address these problems by firming and tightening the skin giving the face and neck a smoother contour. The double chin can also be corrected by Liposuction along with the lift. It is important to know that a face lift will not correct the lines on the forehead, those between the brows or around the eyes. It also can't correct certain skin lines and wrinkles or restore the fullness of the face. Dr. Metwally often recommends facial fillers and Botox for correcting lines and wrinkles after the face lift has taken care of the loose skin and muscles. An upper and/or lower eyelid lift is often performed with the face lift in order to restore youth to the eyes.

What is a Face Lift Surgery?

Face Lift or "Rhytidectomy" is a surgical procedure where the face and neck's excess skin is removed and loose muscles are tightened. You may choose to have only your neck lifted, or your face and neck depending on your case and Dr. Metwally’s recommendation. After this procedure, you will look like you lost 10 to 15 years and people will notice that you look younger and fresher.

Are You a Good Candidate for a Face Lift?

You would be a good candidate for a face lift if you notice that your jowl area is droopy, pulling down the corners of your mouth. You may feel that you lost your youthful jaw line and have a droopy look to it. With most people, this loss begins at the middle point of the jaw line where a small ball of tissue starts to form. Another main concern is the neck where most people have the most complaints. With age, the distance from the end of our chin to our neck becomes smaller until there is no defining line between them this unfortunately is inevitable and creates the old look everyone dislikes. Your facelift will correct your jowl, jaw line, cheeks and neck restoring a smooth contour for your face. A face lift may be performed starting the age of 45.

Preparing For Your Surgery

Before your surgery, Dr. Metwally will perform a complete evaluation with you. You may have problems with your jowl, jaw line, neck or all three. Dr. Metwally will explain to you the procedure that best serves your case. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from our center the day of the surgery. You should wear loose fitting clothes and bear in mind that your outfit may get soiled. Do not wear jewelry, contact lenses, or bring valuables to the operating room. Remove all body jewelry from pierced body parts.

Duration of the Surgery

It takes around 2 and a half hours for a complete facelift procedure. For the neck alone it takes around an hour and a half.

Anesthesia Used

The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation (you won’t be totally asleep but you will be relaxed and drowsy and won’t feel anything during the procedure). It can also be performed under general anesthesia (you will be asleep throughout the procedure). You will be ready to leave after 2 to 3 hours from the completion of your surgery depending on the anesthesia used.

During Your Surgery

During your surgery an incision is made right in front of the ear, circles around the earlobe and proceeds behind the ear. The incisions are placed in a way where they are hidden along the corrugated cartilage of the ear and in the crease behind the ear and into the hair so you can still wear your hair back. Most candidates for a face lift opt to have other procedures done simultaneously such as upper and lower eyelid lift. Sometimes the candidate is only interested in the neck area, in such cases the neck lift alone could be performed.

After Your Surgery

After your surgery you will feel sore for the first 3 days. Dr. Metwally will prescribe to you an antibiotic along with a pain killer to prevent infection and alleviate pain. You will have drains to drain any fluids from your neck for about 2 days. You can shower and wear make-up after five days. Most patients go back to work after approximately 1 week. Your stitches will be removed after two weeks during which you will wear a head band. Your incisions will be a bit pink for around three months but are quite easy to cover using concealer or foundation.

Seeing Your Result

How soon the result starts to show often varies from one person to the other depending on many factors. Some people heal faster than others for reasons like age, skin color and skin type. Other factors are related to the level of correction made in the surgery like the amount of skin removed and the surgeon’s skills. According to Dr. Metwally’s observation of his own patients, most of them start seeing results as early as the seventh day of the surgery and the final result usually takes 8 weeks. The results for your face lift usually last for 15 years.
